Newcastle 3 Bournemouth 3 AET and NUFC win 7-6 on penalties – Saturday 10 January 2026 3pm

What a match, United are through after winning 7-6 on penalties.

My nerves are shredded!!!

Eddie Howe made seven changes but still a strong looking Newcastle team.Fans getting their wish as well, with for the first time Woltemade and Wissa in the same starting eleven.

After only seven minutes it looked like the perfect start to their partnership, Big Nick in a more withdrawn role feeding Wissa, only for his shot to produce a brilliant save from Petrovic.

Five minutes later and this time Barnes the provider, as Wissa saw his header saved by the Bournemouth keeper.

However, the opening stages seeing Aaron Ramsdale forced into making some saves of his own.

As the first half went on though, the goalkeepers seeing less action, the match getting to the break goalless, which you wouldn’t have predicted after the early exchanges.

Within five minutes of the restart though, United in the lead. Woltemade again supplying the chance but this time man of the moment Harvey Barnes getting the opportunity and beating the keeper.Going behind, that goal provoking the visitors into action and once again Ramsdale needing to make saves, then Tino Livramento forced off just before the hour mark due to injury, replaced by Lewis Hall.

A couple of minutes after coming on, Hall’s cross finding Sven Botman, only for his header to come back off the bar.

Within 60 seconds or so, the visitors level, Alex Scott scoring past Aaron Ramsdale.

Worse was to follow as only six minutes later, the visitors on the break and David Brooks putting Bournemouth into the lead.

Eddie Howe reacting straight away with a triple substitution, as Joelinton, Miley and Gordon entered the fray.

Last throw of the dice with Eddie throwing on Bruno, Newcastle back in the ascendancy and Botman putting a header wide, then Gordon seeing his shot saved,.

Both Bruno and Joelinton putting efforts off target, before then Harvey Barnes scoring again. However, having ‘scored’ after Gordon’s effort saved Barnes flagged for offside. With no VAR at this stage of the competition, that was that.Six minutes of added time announced for United to rescue this and halfway through that, Tonali brought down by the keeper. The referee giving a penalty and again, with no VAR, we knew that wasn’t going to change.

For a second game in a row, late drama, Anthony Gordon scoring from the spot.

No more goals and into extra time, Hall once again putting the ball onto Botman’s head but off target once more. Barnes then putting one wide after Woltemade gave him the chance, only for then Ramsdale to be forced into save as the opening half of extra time counted down.

All very open now and Ramsdale called into action once more, saving from Alex Scott early in the second period of extra time.

With penalties looming, Sandro Tonali seeing his 25 yarder just clear the bar and just a few minutes of extra time left.

Then man of the moment, Harvey Barnes in the 118th minute! Anthony Gordon crossing for Barnes to head home.
