Former Celtic star Chris Sutton believes the club should take a gamble on signing Callum Wilson.
The 33-year-old striker, formerly an England international, is nearing a mutual contract termination with Premier League club West Ham United.
Having joined the Hammers in the summer, Wilson has struggled to make a significant impact at West Ham United, scoring just three goals, and was excluded from the matchday squad for their recent defeat.
Given their lack of striking options and Martin O’Neill’s call for January reinforcements, Sutton sees Wilson as a potential asset.
Sutton’s interest in Wilson stems from the striker’s expected availability after a premature contract end with West Ham.
He told Sky Sports: “There is talk of Callum Wilson and his contract ending at West Ham.
“I know he has been injury prone before, but Celtic have to gamble.
“It’s short-term now and needs must, back Martin O’Neill in January, and give yourselves the best possible chance of winning the Premiership.
“That is all Celtic can do now.”
Sutton stresses that this is not the ideal situation for the team or its supporters.
However, he feels that they must embrace the challenge to overcome current circumstances.
“Celtic are six points behind Hearts and Rangers have caught them up,” Sutton said.
“Nobody can tell me there hasn’t been complacency.
“You only need to look at what’s happened.”
Sutton suggests that by bolstering their squad with the addition of Wilson, they can provide their manager, Martin O’Neill, with the requisite backing needed for a successful title defence.
O’Neill has been open about the necessity for reinforcements in the squad to retain their Scottish Premiership crown.
He has referred to this mission as a ‘difficult task’, hinting at the challenges awaiting them.
The discomfort of the current scenario for Sutton lies with complacency.
