Dundee target Celtic star as they rekindle transfer interest

Posted on January 8, 2026January 8, 2026 by Mrsport

Dundee are interested in signing Celtic right-back Colby Donovan on loan after failing to secure him during the summer transfer window.
The 19-year-old Scotland Under-21s star was lined up for a loan move to the Dens Park side until Celtic’s first-choice Alistair Johnston sustained an injury.

As a result of Johnston’s injury, Donovan, who has been in and out of the first team, gained valuable first-team experience.

However, his game time has been limited since Wilfried Nancy’s arrival.
This could now change with Martin O’Neill’s return, as Donovan featured faily heavily for the 73-year-old in his previous stint.

In light of this and Johnston’s injury, Celtic decided against loaning him out in the summer, putting a spanner in the works of Dundee’s plans.

Despite this, the club’s interest in the player remains, and according to a report by the Daily Record, they are considering a move for the youngster.

However, any movement on this front will depend on O’Neill’s plans for Donovan for the rest of the campaign.

Celtic have already strengthened this part of the pitch with the signing of Julian Araujo on loan from Bournemouth and have Anthony Ralston as a potential option.

Another factor playing into this situation is whether Johnston is still expected to be out for a while longer.

Dundee manager Steven Pressley is understood to be looking to strengthen in both full-back positions and in midfield, and has already secured Burnley forward Joe Bevan as his first signing of the month.
