Major factor in Ange Postecoglou potentially returning to Celtic named by insider journo

Posted on January 7, 2026January 7, 2026 by Mrsport

Celtic have made a recent habit out of returning to previous managers.

Neil Lennon, Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill have all been offered the chance to return in recent times.
With the appointment of Wilfried Nancy, the Hoops went for something different, and it blew up in their face with six defeats in eight matches.

As a result, O’Neill is back in the door with his second interim appointment this season – but whether he is a long-term option remains to be seen.

Looking at long-term contenders, could Ange Postecoglou be in the running?

Ange Postecoglou to Celtic update

Since leaving Glasgow for Tottenham Hotspurs in 2023, Postecoglou has had an eventful few years.

He guided Spurs to fifth in his first season, and won the Europa League in his second – remarkably being sacked in the process.
Nottingham Forest offered him a quickfire return, but after a Nancy-esque dismal opening eight games, he was sacked by them too.

This has left him available to Celtic, and the Hoops would be daft not to reach out – talkSPORT Ben Jacobs has been discussing his candidacy.

He said: “Ange Postecoglou would, perhaps, be the most obvious choice, and an easy way of winning the fanbase over.

“Yet, prior to Nancy, Postecoglou was a contender, and wasn’t that keen on diving into that role and returning to Celtic.

“Something would have to change there, and wage is another factor as well.

“He might, obviously, want to make a concession, because he knows he’s not going to get Premier League money and a Premier League job imminently.

“But that’s a consideration, so Postecoglou may be spoken of.”

Other long-term candidates for Celtic

If O’Neill brings success this season but doesn’t want to stay on, could Shaun Maloney step up into the managers’ role alongside Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus? Potentially.

Craig Bellamy was also of interest to Celtic after Rodgers’ departure, but committed until the World Cup with Wales. His stance could change by the summer.

Robbie Keane is another former Hoops striker currently in a job – Rod Stewart would certainly be happy if he was the chosen one.

Jens Askou of Motherwell has also been mentioned by fans.
