Rangers, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Hibs charged over pyro breaches as SPFL slam ‘unacceptable’ behaviour

Posted on January 9, 2026January 9, 2026 by Mrsport

The clubs have been punished due to fan behaviour at five separate matches in November and DecemberFour Premiership clubs have been punished by after breaching SPFL rules around fan behaviour at matches this season amid the continued crackdown on pyrotechnics.Rangers, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Hibs have all been charged due to the use of pyrotechnics during five separate league fixtures in November and December: Dundee v Aberdeen, Falkirk v Motherwell, Motherwell v Hibernian, Kilmarnock v Rangers and Rangers v Motherwell. All four clubs were found to have breached SPFL Rule H37 – hereby failing to ensure that their supporters did not engage in ‘unacceptable conduct’ as well as being found guilty of failing to take disciplinary action against the individuals responsible for bringing the pyrotechnics into stadiums.Aberdeen have been hit with a suspended reduction of 50 tickets for an away Premiership game after a pyrotechnic display launched during their 3-1 victory over Dundee on December 6 led to a child sustaining a burn injury while another suffered from respiratory issues. The pitch at Dens Park was also left damaged.A Pittodrie statement read: “Aberdeen FC has once again been sanctioned by the SPFL following a pyrotechnic display prior to the Club’s away match against Dundee at Dens Park on 6 December. The illegal, unauthorised and unsupervised ignition of multiple strobe-effect devices by a small number of supporters ahead of kick-off resulted in damage to the Dens Park pitch and caused a burn injury to a child, as well as respiratory issues for another supporter.”Following the citation, the sanction imposed on the Club is a suspended reduction of 50 tickets for a future away match in an SPFL competition. This suspension is conditional and will be activated should any further pyrotechnics be used by our supporters at an away match. The suspended sanction will remain in place until June 2026.

“This is the second sanction issued to the Club by the SPFL within the past six months for the use of pyrotechnics by our supporters. As a result, Aberdeen FC is now under a suspended sentence for both home and away matches. Any further use of unauthorised pyrotechnics will directly punish fellow supporters by reducing ticket allocations and restricting access to matches. It will also have significant financial consequences for the Club, including potential fines and lost ticketing revenue.

“The SPFL has made it clear that a zero-tolerance approach will be adopted and have a sliding scale of even more punitive sanctions available should the Club once again find itself in breach. Anyone found in possession of, or using, a pyrotechnic device may face criminal proceedings, receive a football banning order, and risk being prohibited from attending matches at Pittodrie and away venues.”

“We want every member of the Red Army to have the opportunity to support the team in a safe environment. We therefore urge all supporters to cooperate and play their part in ensuring there are no further incidents, either at home or away.”

Motherwell have seen 50 away tickets slashed for their trip to Dundee on Wednesday February 4 following the use of pyrotechnics by fans in clashes against Falkirk and Rangers on December 3 and December 27, in which 20 devices were activated during both games. They have also been whacked with an additional suspended reduction of a 100 tickets for future away games if SPFL Rule H37 regulations are broken again.Ibrox giants Rangers have received an immediate reduction of 50 briefs for their away clash with Hibs on Sunday, February 1 having trigged the suspended sanction handed down from the use of pyrotechnics by fans during their trip to Motherwell on October 14.

A child was injured as a result of a massive display started by Gers fans during the 3-0 win over Killie on December 6. The club have accepted the punishment and urged supporters to cease their activities in a statement which reads: “Rangers acknowledges the SPFL sanction imposed on the club today following the use of pyrotechnics at the away match against Kilmarnock last month.”As a result, a previously suspended reduction of 50 tickets will now be applied for our visit to Hibernian on 2 February. In addition, the SPFL has imposed a further suspended sanction, which would see a reduction of 100 tickets at a future away league match should there be any further use of pyrotechnics by Rangers supporters at an away fixture before the end of the season.

“The reduction in allocation means that fewer tickets are available for this fixture for Rangers fans. In administering that reduction, we will apply the sameprinciples used previously: accountability and fairness. Further detail on how this will be applied will be discussed with the Fan Advisory Board and those involved.

“The position on pyrotechnics is clear. Beyond the obvious safety risks they pose to supporters, incidents of this nature are now leading to increasingly firm action from football authorities, with sanctions being applied across more than one competition. Rangers is one of several SPFL clubs to have been sanctioned today as a result of recent pyrotechnic use.”In addition, Rangers remains subject to a suspended one-match ban on away ticket sales in European competition, which would be triggered if a similar incident occurs within the next two years in UEFA competitions. In simple terms, to avoid further, escalating sanctions, the use of pyrotechnics at our games must stop.

“As the season enters a crucial stage, the backing of our supporters away from home will be more important than ever. Having as many Rangers fans as possible there to support the team can make a real difference, and we want that support to be vocal, united and safe for everyone.”And finally, capital club Hibs have been handed a suspended sanction of 50 tickets for a future Premiership away game after being punished for the use of pyrotechnics in a 2-0 loss to Motherwell on November 25 where the devices were later thrown towards players and staff of their opponents.
